Tibet Travel Permit

All travelers intending to visit Tibet must obtain a special travel permit issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau. This permit can be processed through your tour operator, provided you have a confirmed travel plan and have paid for the tour. Most European nationals can travel to Tibet with this authorized permit for up to 30 days. However, some nationalities require an additional endorsement from the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu, along with their original passport. This process takes three working days and involves a processing fee. Please note that individual permits are not issued; a minimum group of five people is required.

This applies if you start your Tibet tour from Nepal. However, if you begin your tour from a city in China, no endorsement of the Tibet travel permit is necessary. Instead, you will need both a mainland China visa and the Tibet travel permit.
